History and Communities
Surrounding CommunitiesLINCOLN PARK The Lincoln Park neighborhood can be described as Location, Location, Location. North Federal is located at the southeastern most edge of the park. This beautiful lakefront park covers an area roughly from North Avenue to Diversey Parkway. The Lincoln Park Zoo, the Chicago Historical Society, the North Avenue Beach, an endless variety of dining and shopping options, and an amazing selection of vintage and newer homes, condominiums and townhomes make Lincoln Park an attractive setting for young single professionals, couples and families alike.
OLD TOWN Old Town is one of the first "gentrified" or renovated city neighborhoods in the nation. Old Town is located just southwest of North Federal. The Old Town Triangle constitutes one of the largest residential landmark districts in the city, and as such, much of the character, charm and uniqueness has been preserved. The beautiful tree lined streets that contain single family, townhouse, rowhouse, condominium and small apartment buildings, coupled with its proximity to downtown Chicago, attracts both young and established professionals. There are also high-rise apartment buildings with views of Lincoln Park and the Lake. Old Town is walking distance to Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan. Old Town has an abundance of shopping, dining and entertainment featuring the nationally recognized Second City and Steppenwolf Theater Companies. During the second week in June, the Old Town Art Fair attracts artists and art lovers alike.
DE PAUL For over 100 years, De Paul University has anchored this unique neighborhood. This area resides just north of Old Town and west of Lincoln Park. The area is sometimes referred to as Lincoln Park West. There are many restored greystones, rowhouses and small apartment buildings. At the western edge of DePaul, old warehouses and factories have been converted into residential units and new single family and townhome complexes have been constructed. Entertainment, shopping and restaurants on Halsted, Armitage and Clybourn Streets are within walking distance.
GOLD COAST The Gold Coast area is considered the most exclusive neighborhood in the city. With North Avenue on the north, Lake Michigan on the east and Clark street on the west, the Gold Coast is located just southeast of North Federal. The area is a diverse collection of exclusive high-rise apartments and condominiums, beautifully restored brownstones and elegant mansions. The area encompasses Michigan Avenue's "Magnificent Mile" and the Oak Street and Rush Street shopping districts. The Oak Street and North Avenue beaches are within walking distance and the southern end of Lincoln Park is the northern border of the Gold Coast.
THE NORTH SHORE The North Shore consists of Evanston, Glencoe, Highland Park, Kenilworth, Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Wilmette and Winnetka. North Federal has maintained a branch office in Wilmette since 1976. These North Shore communities are some of the oldest and most exclusive in the Chicago area. Excellent educational facilities, including Northwestern University and New Trier High School, attract students and families from all over the country. A wide variety of housing stock is available with "Upper Bracket" type homes along the lakeshore. There is ample shopping and entertainment facilities, although public transportation is limited. The Metra train line provides quick access to downtown Chicago and the Edens Expressway runs along the western edge of the suburbs.
